A CEREMONY in the emergency ward at Campbelltown Hospital wasn't quite the wedding Melanie and Jeremy Doyle had in mind.
But the pair, who featured on the front of last week's Advertiser, were forced to rethink their plans for a fairytale wedding at Camden Valley Inn when Jeremy came down with two infections and was hospitalised on Friday.
The Leumeah couple — who met online in April and soon after fell in love — had already accelerated their marriage plans when Jeremy was diagnosed with terminal cancer in August and given months to live.
"On Friday morning the emergency doctor pulled me aside and asked me how far we were willing to go for Jeremy's treatment," Melanie said. "I just said I needed him for Friday because we were getting married.
"She looked at me and said if getting married was important to us both, we should contact our celebrant today."
Melanie and Jeremy decided love couldn't wait and urgently contacted their wedding celebrant Carolyn Wilson.
"I just went home and grabbed what I needed to get married, which was basically my makeup, my big old can of hairspray and earrings and came back to the hospital while Mum collected my dress," Melanie said.
"One of the nurses told me I couldn't do my own nails on my wedding day, so she sat me down and did them for me."
As Melanie got ready, nurses and paramedics covered the walls of a hospital room with white sheets and strung up fairy lights they found in the children's ward.
They ordered a cake from Willis Cakes and Pies, bought a bottle of champagne and organised for a florist to create a bouquet.
"They were just so lovely, they were beautiful," Melanie said.
"An ambulance officer did my hair and makeup and they were all sitting around asking me about Jeremy just like any girl getting married."
The pair called on a small group of family members and Melanie's father walked her down the aisle.
"When it was time I walked down the hallway and there was a sea of hospital workers and then I turned the corner and Jeremy was lying in his bed with his buttonhole and it was just the sweetest thing to see, it was just beautiful.
"It was a bit more intimate than we had planned. But we always said it didn't matter where we got married, as long as we got married.
Jeremy said: "I'm happy we did it I just wish we did it earlier. Seeing her come around the corner in her dress was a beautiful sight."
The pair are unsure whether Friday's reception will still go ahead, but said if it does they want it to be "a celebration of life and love".
