Day of action against CSG planned

16 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
THE Scenic Hills Association will hold the second in a series of community meetings to build up support for a Campbelltown day of action against coal seam gas extraction.

The meeting will be held from 1pm to 2.45pm this Saturday, November 19, at Hurley Park Community Hall in Dumaresq Street, Campbelltown, and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Association spokeswoman Jacqui Kirkby said that at the first community meeting there were about 65 people, including Campbelltown MP Bryan Doyle and representatives from the AGL mining company.

Parts of Campbelltown and the Scenic Hills have been earmarked for the Camden Gas Project's northern expansion. If the plans, which are now before the state government, are approved, 72 gas extraction wells will be drilled.

Ms Kirkby said the members of the association would make a presentation that would consider the impact of coal seam gas mining on the community and on residents' health and lifestyle, the environment and land values.

"We will then allocate time for others to contribute, for questions and to gauge support for a Campbelltown Day of Action against coal seam gas mining," Ms Kirkby said.

Mr Doyle said the meetings were important because residents had to be fully informed about coal seam gas mining.
