Council appeals power plant

26 Aug, 2009 11:49 AM
A LETTER of appeal was sent to AGL and the NSW Minister for Planning last week after the controversial Leafs Gully Power Plant was approved in Appin.

Upset Campbelltown councillors said a full submission was made to the State Government three years ago about the health and environmental risks the $200 million gas-fired power station would have on the community.

Mayor Russell Matheson said he read a recommendation that no power plant was to be built in the Sydney basin.

``Three years ago there was an audit done on the air quality in south-west Sydney and the outcome was that no infrastructure was to be built in the Sydney basin,'' Cr Matheson said.

``The State Government does not like pressure or criticism, but what they are building here is not modern technology.

``The Government is not worried about the community's well-being. We're hoping they will find some sort of fault in the process and we are sorting through the conditions of consent.''

An urgent council meeting was held recently as councillors agreed that their detailed submission made to the State Government was not replied to.

A report, submitted by the council, outlined the health and environmental impact that the gas-fired plant would have on the area.

Campbelltown was listed as a suburb where Sydney's air pollution became trapped.

Cr Matheson said the people taken into hospital for asthma and other health conditions from the power plant would cost the State Government more in the long term.

``It's a joke,'' he said. ``At this time, where are our local representatives?''
