HOUSES will be sold at discounted prices in Ambarvale and Rosemeadow as part of a $40-million project, the Department of Housing said last week.
Although exact prices have yet to be determined, the department's acting general manager Julian Neylan says the scheme will enable low income earners to buy their own homes.
Mr Neylan attended a launch of the newest plan with executive director Ken Bone in Campbelltown. Maps displayed at the launch revealed the department's intention to integrate public and private housing around crime hot-spots including the 3Ms Macbeth, Malcolm and Macduff ways.
``We want this area to be considered as a normal suburb and not characterised by dead-end streets,'' Mr Bone said.
``More than 100 houses will be sold. Private buyers will get the opportunity to purchase cheap housing. It will be quite affordable for someone on a basic salary to buy one of these cottages or townhouses.''
About 40 houses will be renovated and retained as public housing properties.
Existing roads will be extended to link to the major thoroughfares of Copperfield and Cleopatra drives and Julius Road.
Mr Neylan said the department's 10-year goal was to upgrade 550 properties in Ambarvale and Rosemeadow.
Elderly residents will be given the option to reside in the new senior living units nearby.
Mr Bone said some residents would be relocated.
``The nature of public housing has changed significantly,'' he said. ``It's important that we mix communities together so there will be a mix of life experiences where kids can mix with other kids with different aspirations.''
People can find out more about the project through a community information session at Ambarvale High School's hall tomorrow, September 24 at 9.30am, 1pm and 4pm.
The school is located in Thomas Rose Drive, Rosemeadow.
