CAMPBELLTOWN Catholic Club has applied to add another 20 poker machines to its existing 450 in a bid to raise an extra $1.5million a year.
The club is among 20 in NSW seeking approval from the Casino Control Authority for more poker machines. Pokies tax, smoking bans and patrons spending less have resulted in clubs seeking extra machines in order to offset a revenue fall.
But not all revenue will stay at the club.
Chief executive and licensee Michael Lavorato said they would donate $50,000 to Youth Solutions for the next three years if the application was approved.
``The approval will be subject to strict conditions,'' he said. ``We've had our target margin eroded by things like smoking bans, high gaming taxes and our community donations have dropped.
``Youth Solutions will benefit from the revenue raised the organisation will use the money to extend its research into binge drinking. A lot of clubs are in financial stress and the clubs that are performing well are few and far between.''
Youth Solutions chief executive Debbie Roberts said if the approval went ahead, the donated money would enable them to further their research.
``The difficult thing about being an organisation like ours is that we have to seek funds but this will help us through the next three years,'' she said.
``We're very excited and pleased that we could be given this donation it will give us an opportunity to build on our Don't Be [A] Random campaign.''
The Casino Control Authority is expected to decide on the application in the coming months.
