 Car park `failure'

Car park `failure'

28 Oct, 2009 01:00 AM
THE State Government needs to find another site for a giant commuter car park instead of dumping it next to the Macarthur Gardens estate.

This was the statement of Liberal councillor Jai Rowell, who put forward a motion at last week's Campbelltown Council meeting, addressing Transport Infrastructure's controversial plan.

Last week, the Advertiser reported on locals angry about a 450-space car park planned for Hidcote Road about 60metres from some properties.

They had expected more homes and manicured gardens to be built on the site.

Cr Rowell said the council should seek legal advice to stop the construction of the car park which was more than 500metres from Macarthur train station.

``Campbelltown Council [should] write to Wollondilly MP and Minister for Regional Development Phil Costa and the Minister for Planning Kristina Keneally to ask `Has a report been commissioned to access the option of constructing a commuter car park for Macarthur Station on the University of Western Sydney, Campbelltown Campus side of the station?''' he asked in his motion.

``We need to request that they adopt an appropriate measure of consultation and discussion with the community prior to any construction and inform Mr Costa and Ms Keneally that Campbelltown Council is opposed to a car park so far away from the train station.

``Campbelltown Council [should also] write to the Campbelltown local area commander to seek his view on any potential adverse impacts on the current proposal at the location.''

Cr Rowell looks certain to be endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate to take on Mr Costa at the next state election.

Cr Rowell said the car park site was not practical for elderly people or those living with disabilities.

``I went down there recently myself to hear people's concerns and a lot are concerned about the car park only being 60metres away from their homes,'' he said.

``This is another Labor failed planning development and I personally wouldn't want my children walking home at night to that car park. It's not a practical site because the roads around there can't cope with the traffic from the car park.''

A Transport Infrastructure spokesman said last week that the public display of the plans was extended until yesterday, October27.
