 Backing for Hayes grows

Backing for Hayes grows

18 Nov, 2009 09:58 AM
THE Labor Party is under continuing public pressure to preselect federal MP Chris Hayes to run again for his seat of Werriwa.

No party statement was made last week over the reported plan to have him stand in Macarthur.

Mr Hayes is refusing to be sidelined to the marginal seat of Macarthur, held by the Liberal Party since 1986.

He could be dumped by Labor Party chiefs who are using the seat of Werriwa as a factional bargaining chip.

It is understood that about 150 branch members attended a forum last week and unanimously supported Mr Hayes as the local candidate. But still no guarantees or commitments have come from ALP head office.

Last week, Mr Hayes said he was not ``a mouthpiece for hire'' and that he would not run for preselection in any seat other than Werriwa.

``I'm a genuine representative of my seat,'' he said.

The Advertiser has been inundated with support for Mr Hayes from voters disgusted at the Labor Party's attack on the local man.

One resident, Heather Murphy, said the situation was ``unfair'' and that the ALP was moving Mr Hayes to benefit itself rather than the people of Campbelltown.

``Chris is a local and has supported local issues for his area,'' she said.

``The other question to be asked is why would the Labor Party move a successful and well-supported member who doesn't want to move.''

Julie Foster, of St Andrews, said she was keen to see Mr Hayes remain.

``Chris has provided me with great support, personally and to my triathlon club,'' she said.

``He goes out of his way to help people.''

Arthur Fakas said he was disappointed with the ALP's factional games.

``Chris has been instrumental in supporting our club, Macquarie Triathlon, and assisting us in accessing funding to upgrade our club including money for a new bike track,'' he said.
