WHEELCHAIR athlete Paul Nunnari wants to be Labor's candidate for Macarthur at the next federal election.
In his bid for preselection, Mr Nunnari looks set to challenge Nick Bleasdale, of Macquarie Links, who was the ALP candidate in 2007.
Mr Nunnari, who lives in Camden, is also Campbelltown MP Graham West's policy adviser and recently forwarded a letter to rank and file for support.
Mr Nunnari said he had the determination, tenacity and public standing to defeat the Liberal Party candidate, Russell Matheson.
``Russell has always been a nice guy to me but I don't know how people will relate to him now that he is a Liberal member, because he was known as an independent for so long,'' Mr Nunnari said.
``I have the passion to represent the area because I am a pretty passionate person that resonates with this community.
``Nick [Bleasdale] ran the 2007 campaign when WorkChoices was a big issue, which was a big part of his success at the time, but I feel that the community needs someone they can relate to and this community relates to me. I have lived in the area for almost 30 years.''
Mr Nunnari said his inspiration was US president Franklin Roosevelt, who was paralysed from the waist down after he contracted polio.
Mr Nunnari said he related not only to people who were wheelchair-bound, but also to young families.
``My wheelchair has never defined who I am and it has never stopped me from achieving anything,'' he said.
Mr Nunnari lives with his partner, Linda Fliedner, and they have a 19-month-old son, Xy Rocco.
Mr Bleasdale, who was reluctant to speak about preselections, said he had a good track record.
``I will be speaking to local party branch members about why I should be the candidate,'' he said.
``I achieved the biggest swing in NSW and the third highest in the country. I think my credentials speaks for themselves.
``I never underestimate my opponents and I do recognise that this could be a tough battle. I am solely focused on preselections. Preselections are a matter for the ALP.''
Camden Deputy Mayor Greg Warren said he would decide whether he too would stand for preselection for the seat once ALP preselections were called.
``I'll do whatever is in the best interest of my community,'' he said.
