The Angels are still flying so high

01 Jul, 2009 02:06 PM
ANY good band feeds off audience energy but The Angels the quintessential Aussie pub rock band will sing exactly what fans want to hear at their show in Campbelltown.

The band, which is likened to ACDC, had fans decide their set list for their ``by request'' national tour, which stops at Campbelltown RSL on Friday fortnight, July 17.

It was The Angels' fans, after all, who added to the band's popular track Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? with the chant ``No way, get ...'' and you know the rest.

Frontman Doc Neeson said having fans request the tracks would ``make it fresh for the band'', which re-formed in August last year.

``It'll be pretty interesting for the audience and for the band,'' Neeson told the Advertiser.

``Quite often when we finish a set, at least 90 percent of the time some fans will come up and say `that was a great show but why didn't you play song x?

``So we thought we'd let the public tell us what they'd like to hear and base a set around that.

``I always think of a show as half the band, half the audience.

``If the audience is excited about the song that we're playing then we are.''

It's no surprise then that one of the top requested tracks has been Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?.

``I like doing the song,'' Neeson said. ``The audience created the response the chant.

``We get a great buzz when the audience does sing along.''

Neeson told the Advertiser he felt ``lucky to be a musician'', particularly after he suffered permanent nerve damage in a car accident 10 years ago, after which he had to quit The Angels.

``It was horrible and I was deeply depressed and a couple of times seriously suicidal,'' Neeson said.

``My back specialist, an Angels fan, said `Doc, I know how you perform, but if you don't stop now you're going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life'.

``I did stop performing. It took a while to sink in and I gradually started playing again with my own band, Doc Neeson's Angels.

``The thing that got me through was the support of my family and close friends.

``I got a sense of perspective of what I value in life and it helps me enjoy the show a lot more.''

Neeson said the tour would feature ``the classic Angels line-up'' himself, John and Rick Brewster, Chris Bailey and Buzz Bidstrup.

``I think there are certain personality clashes that are just inherent in the make- up of the band, but that also produces the creative chemistry,'' he said.

``We did 18 gigs last year and sold out.

``We found there was a lot of demand from promoters.

``The Angels are an Australian icon.

``We just love to rock.''

The Angels, Campbelltown RSL, Friday, July 17, 8.30pm. Tickets: $40. Over-18s only.
