MICHAEL Hindson's compositions draw inspiration from death metal and electro, but his latest ambition is to promote Campbelltown as a place of musical excellence.
Dr Hindson has been appointed the first guest music curator at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.
His appointment will be from 2010 to 2012, and he said music lovers from all over Sydney should be travelling to Campbelltown.
``I'm hoping to bring some Australian and some international performers of really amazing standard to Campbelltown so that when people think, `I want to go out and hear something amazing,' they'll wonder what's going on in Campbelltown,'' he said.
He has been a composer for more than 30 years and his music is popular with youth orchestras all over the world.
Dr Hindson said he thought younger audiences connected with his music because he incorporates popular styles like techno, death metal and electro.
He said death metal often used fast electric guitar solos and started him wondering how such passages would work in an orchestral arrangement.
Under Dr Hindson's artistic direction, the Campbelltown Arts Centre will produce two new programs The Prestige, a concert series with internationally acclaimed classical ensembles, and The Edge, with emerging artists who challenge musical boundaries by using cutting edge technology and musical forms.
Mayor Russell Matheson said Dr Hindson's appointment was a great achievement for Campbelltown.
``His music reflects the youthfulness, drive and energy of our region and its people,'' Cr Matheson said.
