Born into power of persuasion

SHANE St James is always surprised by the way people react when he hypnotises them.

While many mimic stars such as Michael Jackson or Mick Jagger, you never knew what you were going to get on stage.

``We were in Japan recently doing a TV show and I said to one guy, `When you go down to the audience I will say the word pants and you will think you've lost your pants.

``When the translator said that the crowd roared with laughter and I didn't know why.

``The guy looks down, looks at the zip, unzips it and pulls his pants down ... lost in translation, he thought he had to pull his pants down. It was quite funny to me as well as I wasn't expecting that.''

But St James said his performances were usually suitable for all ages.

``We don't embarrass anybody on stage. A lot of people say, `I don't want to see a hypnotist. He'll drag me up on stage.' But I don't, I ask volunteers.''

Mr St James said he had enjoyed watching his father, Martin St James, perform.

``I was really born into it and I slept on the side of the stage from when I was six months old.''

Western Suburbs Leagues Club, October 16, 8pm. Tickets $25. Inquiries, bookings: 46284188.
